Hoboken Charter School

Sept. 7, 2012

Dear Families:

As promised, here is a status update for you. Administrators and members of the board visited a number of potential interim sites for the K-8 program yesterday and today and have identified several viable options. Over the course of the weekend, we will evaluate which option is most appropriate for restoring operations without compromising the integrity of the educational program. We have decided to cancel classes on Monday, Sept. 10, Tuesday, Sept. 11, and Wednesday, Sept. 12, while we work through the process.

The Office of Emergency Management and Hoboken Fire Department are currently in control of the building. These officials have stated that that there is no unauthorized access to the building. For your and your child’s safety, please do not request access.

We appreciate the countless emails and phone calls we have received from parents offering their help and support. Please feel free to reach out to Lauren Calmas at lcalmashcs@gmail.com to discuss how you might be of assistance.

Based on the numerous offers for donations we’ve received from residents and businesses in the Hoboken community and beyond, Caroline Halstead has agreed to act as the point person to receive and manage these inquiries on behalf of the school. We have set up an email address for this effort: rebuildhcs@gmail.com. Please feel free to forward this email address to anyone you know who is interested in providing a donation.

Yesterday was a very emotional day for everyone, but we certainly have a lot to be thankful for. Our dedicated teachers and staff members acted thoughtfully, bravely and in a caring manner to ensure all of our students were safe and accounted for. Day in and day out, our staff members distinguish themselves by showing just how dedicated they are to our students’ well-being, but yesterday, their actions were truly exceptional. I know that I am not alone when I say “thank you” to them for taking such great care of our students.

We will continue to provide you with regular status updates.

Thank You.

NJ Transit presented this mockup of their plan at the City Council last Wednesday.
The mammoth towers are gone but they are looking for buildings in the two dozen floor range.
The City is proposing smaller buildings and a reduced overall footprint,
from three million square feet to two million square feet being the difference.

Talking Ed Note: A referendum ballot on rent control is the additional item on the agenda.
